Eat more fruit before the fruit eats you

While generally I applaud Tesco's decision to provide free fruit in-store for kids, I am unnerved by this giant fruit golem they have created to promote it:

He's obviously meant to be a big, friendly pile of fruit, brought to life by a desire to help kids snack healthier. I wonder what kids think about it. I find it uncanny enough as an adult.

Next to the giant cardboard golem you can see another part of the campaign, cute little plushies of fruit and veg. (I almost bought a mushroom.) They are both adorable and affordable, and seem a bit out of kilter with the animated fruit harvest next to them.

Like many examples I find of odd products and strange marketing, I would love to have been in the concept meeting and heard the discussions about this one.

Burger shack irony

McDonald’s are running a promotion at the moment where you can instantly win food through finding certain pull-off labels on their fries, sodas, burgers etc.

Last night, Cathy and I were feeling uninspired about cooking and I needed to be out at a meeting early evening, so we went to MaccyD’s. I like mystery prize instant win competitions, but I felt the universe was trying to send me a message through my prize.

I won a fruit bag.

Slightly powdery apple slices and three grapes.

Woo.

Healthy never tasted so disappointing.

When I grow up I want to be an oporopolist

Another word of the week time.

Oporopolists sell fruit for a living.

Several years ago I was in our local Asda and I was checking how hard the plums were. For some reason Asda sells 'soft fruit' that is actually rock hard. Then Cathy turned around and said, in a very loud voice: "Jon! Stop feeling the fruit!"

Everyone present stopped what they were doing and looked at me.

I don't buy plums any more.

I bet there's a sign that says 'Don't touch'

He might be called Phil. He might be a fruit. He might just like puns. Who's to say?

Scaredy Citrus

As is slowly becoming common knowledge, I'm taking part on an am-dram panto in December. It's the Wizard of Oz and in our version (written partly by me) the lion (played by me) is called Elvis and has a secret ambition to become a singer.

Cathy's sister rang last night and asked what we were doing. "I'm making Jon's lion costume," was Cathy's reply. There was an outburst of confusion on the other end of the phone.

"Not lime... LION." said Cathy.

Now that would be a fun version of the Wizard of Oz as Dorothy is befriended by the Cowardly Lime. Talk about giving the story a juicy twist...
